The short answer
To test Meta ad creatives, change one big idea at a time (hook, angle, format or offer), run 3–5 versions together with equal budget using Meta’s creative testing option or a separate testing ad set, and judge them on cost per result after each has spent about 2–3× your target CPA. Use hook rate and CTR to understand why a winner works, then move it into your main campaign.
Before you start
By the end of this SOP
A weekly testing routine with a test log, clear rules for winners and a steady flow of new creatives.
- Time
- 30 minutes to set up, then 7–10 days per test
- You’ll need
- A running Meta campaign with conversion tracking (SOP 017) and 3–5 new creatives.
- Who does this
- The Meta Ads manager with the designer or video editor.
About this SOP: why it matters, where and when
Why it matters: Creative fatigue sets in within weeks. A testing system finds the next winner before results drop.
Where: Meta Ads Manager and a simple test log in Google Sheets.
When: Every week or two for active accounts; whenever frequency rises and CTR falls.
Stage 1
Plan the test
- 1
Decide what you are testing. Test big ideas first, small tweaks later:
- Angle: price vs results vs fear of missing out vs social proof.
- Format: reel vs static vs carousel.
- Hook: the first 3 seconds or the headline.
- Offer: free consultation vs fee discount vs free demo class.
- 2
Write one line per test: “We think a student-result reel will beat the fee-focused static on cost per lead.”
- 3
Make 3–5 versions that differ only in that one idea, so you know what caused the result.
Stage 2
Set up the test
- 1
If your Ads Manager shows the creative testing option at ad level, use it: add the new ads, set a test budget and duration, and Meta splits spend evenly.
- 2
Otherwise, create a separate testing ad set with the same audience as your main one, ad set budget (not campaign budget), and only the test creatives.
- 3
Budget: enough for each creative to spend about 2–3× your target cost per result during the test.
- 4
Name ads with the idea being tested, for example “Reel – student result – hook A”.
Stage 3
Read the results
- 1
Wait until each creative has spent 2–3× target CPA or 7 days, whichever is later. Don’t judge on day one.

Decide on cost per result (cost per lead or purchase). Use the other numbers to explain why:
- Hook rate (3-second video plays ÷ impressions): did it stop the scroll?
- Hold rate (ThruPlays ÷ 3-second plays): did people keep watching?
- Link CTR: did they want to know more?
- Conversion rate: did the landing page or form deliver?
- 3
Call a winner only if it is clearly better (around 20%+ lower cost per result) with enough results. Otherwise, call it a tie and test a bolder idea.
Stage 4
Scale and keep a log
- 1
Add winning creatives to your main campaign as new ads (keep the post ID if you want to keep likes and comments).
- 2
Pause losers in the test. Keep the test log: date, hypothesis, versions, spend, results, winner, lesson.
- 3
Plan the next test from the lesson: if student-result reels win, test different students or different hooks next.
Practice & check
Now do it for real
Reading is not doing. Open your own account and complete this task before you move on.
Practice task (5 min)
Write a test plan for a Kerala institute: one hypothesis, four creative briefs that differ in angle only, budget per creative and the rule for picking a winner.
Prove it
Two questions. Get both right and this SOP is done.
Common questions
How many creatives should I test at once?
3–5 per test. More splits the budget too thin to get clear results on small accounts.
How long should a Meta creative test run?
At least 7 days, and until each creative has spent about 2–3× your target cost per result.
What is a good hook rate?
As a starting rule, 25–35% of impressions watching 3 seconds is solid for reels in India. Compare with your own past ads.
Done. That’s a real skill, not a certificate.
