The short answer

To set up Meta Ads conversion tracking, first install the Meta Pixel. Then either create a Custom Conversion in Events Manager using your thank-you page URL, or fire a standard event such as Lead or Purchase from Google Tag Manager. Test it with Meta Pixel Helper, then choose that event as the conversion goal in your ad set.

Before you start

By the end of this SOP

Your key action (lead, sign-up or purchase) is tracked and can be picked as the optimisation event in Meta Ads.

Time
15–30 minutes
You’ll need
The Meta Pixel installed (SOP 005) and Google Tag Manager on your site (SOP 004).
Who does this
The person responsible for paid advertising or analytics.
About this SOP: why it matters, where and when

Why it matters: Meta optimises for whatever you track. Track the real result and it finds more people like your buyers.

Where: In Meta Events Manager and Google Tag Manager.

When: Before your first conversion campaign, and every time you add a new important action.

Stage 1

Choose your tracking method

Two ways to track a conversion. Pick the one that fits your website.

  1. 1

Custom Conversion: best when the action ends on a unique thank-you page (e.g. /thank-you-enquiry). No GTM work needed.

  2. 2

Standard event through GTM: best when there is no thank-you page (e.g. an on-page form), or for “Add to cart” style actions.

    Tip

Not sure? If your form sends people to a thank-you page, start with a Custom Conversion. It’s the fastest to set up.

  3. 3

Golden rule: a Lead fires only when the form is really sent, never when someone just clicks “Enquire now”.

  4. 4

WhatsApp or call buttons: track them as a separate “Contact” event, not as Lead. Real leads and chat clicks stay apart in reports.

Stage 2

Option A: create a Custom Conversion

  1. 1

In Events Manager, open Custom conversions from the left menu and click “Create custom conversion”.

  2. 2

    Fill in the details:

    • Name: short and clear, e.g. “Lead – Course enquiry”.
    • Data source: your website’s dataset.
    • Conversion event: Lead (or Purchase, Complete registration, etc.).
    • Rule: URL contains a part only your thank-you page has, e.g. /thank-you-enquiry.
    • Value (optional): what one conversion is worth to you.
  3. 3

Click Create. Open your thank-you page in a new tab, wait a minute, and refresh. The status turns Active.

Stage 3

Option B: fire a standard event with GTM

  1. 1

Create the Lead trigger from a successful submit, in this order of preference:

    • Thank-you page: Triggers → New → “Page View – Some Page Views” → Page URL contains /thank-you-enquiry.
    • Form plugin event: many plugins (Contact Form 7, WPForms, Elementor) push a success event to the dataLayer. Use Triggers → New → “Custom Event” with that event name, e.g. wpcf7mailsent.
    • Last resort: “Form Submission” with “Check Validation” ticked. Test it carefully in Preview.
  2. 2

Create a tag: Tags → New → Custom HTML, paste fbq('track', 'Lead', {}, {eventID: 'lead-' + Date.now()}); inside <script> tags, and add your Lead trigger. Name it “Meta – Lead”.

    • The eventID lets Meta remove duplicates when the same lead also arrives through the Conversions API (SOP 005).
  3. 3

WhatsApp button: in Variables → Configure tick the Click variables, then create a trigger “Click – Just Links” → Some Link Clicks → Click URL contains wa.me (or api.whatsapp.com). Add a Custom HTML tag with fbq('track', 'Contact'); and name it “Meta – Contact WhatsApp”.

  4. 4

Submit and Publish with a clear version name.

Stage 4

Test and use it in your ads

  1. 1

Open your site with Meta Pixel Helper and do the action. You should see your event (e.g. Lead) appear.

    Tip

Testing a button that opens a new page? Hold Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) while clicking so the page doesn’t reload before you can check.

  2. 2

In Events Manager → Test events, confirm the event also arrives there.

  3. 3

In Ads Manager, create a Leads or Sales campaign. In the ad set, choose Website as the conversion location and pick your Lead event, not Contact.

  4. 4

After a week, compare Meta’s lead count with the client’s enquiry sheet or CRM. They should be close.

    • Meta shows far more? Something is double-counting or firing too early.
    • Lead quality poor? Consider a qualifying question on the form, or send CRM stages (qualified, enrolled) back to Meta through the Conversions API so it can optimise for real customers.

Practice & check

Now do it for real

Reading is not doing. Open your own account and complete this task before you move on.

Practice task (5 min)

Track one real form submit (as Lead) and one WhatsApp button click (as Contact) on your practice site. Screenshot Pixel Helper showing both events.

Prove it

1. Your form sends people to /thank-you-enquiry. What’s the fastest way to track it?
2. When should the Meta Lead event fire?
3. Do you still need to verify your domain to use conversion events in 2026?

Two questions. Get both right and this SOP is done.

Common questions

What is the difference between a standard event and a custom conversion?

A standard event (Lead, Purchase) is sent from your website by the pixel. A custom conversion is a rule in Events Manager, usually based on a URL, that turns page visits into a conversion.

Do I still need to configure 8 events in Aggregated Event Measurement?

No. Since 2025 Meta removed the 8-event limit and the need to configure events per domain.

Why does my custom conversion show “Inactive”?

No one has visited the matching URL yet. Open your thank-you page yourself, wait a minute and refresh Events Manager.

Done. That’s a real skill, not a certificate.
