The short answer
To install the Meta Pixel, open Events Manager in Meta Business Suite, click “Connect data”, choose Web, and name your dataset. Connect it with a partner integration such as Google Tag Manager or Shopify, or paste the base code into your site’s <head>. Then open your site with the Meta Pixel Helper extension to confirm it fires.
Before you start
By the end of this SOP
The Meta Pixel fires a PageView on every page of your website.
- Time
- 5–10 minutes
- You’ll need
- A Meta business portfolio with an ad account (SOP 010), and Google Tag Manager on your site (SOP 004) unless you use Shopify.
- Who does this
- The person responsible for the website or paid advertising.
About this SOP: why it matters, where and when
Why it matters: The pixel lets you build retargeting audiences and lets Meta optimise ads for people likely to take action on your site.
Where: In Meta Events Manager and Google Tag Manager (or Shopify).
When: Once per website, before your first website campaign.
Stage 1
Create your pixel (dataset)
- 1
Install the free “Meta Pixel Helper” extension in Chrome. You will use it to test.
- 2
Go to business.facebook.com, open the right business portfolio, then click All tools → Events Manager.
- 3
Click “Connect data” (the green + icon), choose “Web” and click Connect.
- 4
Name the dataset after the website (e.g. “Unlearn Academy – Website”) and click Create.
Watch out
Check whether a pixel already exists before you create one. A second pixel splits your data across two datasets, so audiences and results end up in the wrong place.
- 5
Health, clinic, pharmacy or wellness business? Open the dataset’s Settings and check the business category.
Watch out
Since 2025 Meta limits data from health and wellness sites: some lower-funnel events and URL details are blocked. Never put treatments or conditions in page URLs or event names (e.g. /root-canal-booking).
Stage 2
Connect the pixel to your website
Pick one method. Do not install the pixel twice.
- 1
With Google Tag Manager: in the setup, choose “Set up with a partner integration” → Google Tag Manager, sign in with your Google account and pick your container. Meta adds the base code tag for you.
- Turn on Automatic Advanced Matching (it sends hashed email or phone from forms, which helps Meta match visitors). Meta switches it off itself for restricted categories like health.
- 2
Prefer manual control? In GTM, add a new Custom HTML tag, paste the pixel base code from Events Manager, set the trigger to “All Pages”, then Submit and Publish.
- Using a consent banner (SOP 004)? In the tag’s Advanced settings → Consent settings, require ad_storage so the pixel waits for consent.
- 3
Agency standard: also send events through the Conversions API (CAPI). It sends the same events from the server, so you lose fewer results to ad blockers and iPhone privacy settings.
- Easiest options: the official WordPress or WooCommerce plugin, Shopify’s app, or Meta’s Conversions API Gateway.
- Deduplication: the pixel and the server must send the same event name and the same event_id, or Meta counts one lead twice.
- 4
Shopify: in Shopify admin, add the “Facebook & Instagram” app, connect your business portfolio, choose the dataset, and set data sharing to “Maximum”.
Stage 3
Test the pixel
- 1
Open your website in Chrome and click the Meta Pixel Helper icon.
- 2
You should see one pixel with a green PageView event. Its ID must match the dataset ID in Events Manager.
Tip
You can also use Events Manager → Test events. Enter your site URL and watch events arrive live.
Agency playbook
Doing this for a paying client
What a senior checks before calling the job done. Numbers are starting rules; compare them with the account’s own history.
What good looks like
- The dataset is owned by the client’s business portfolio. Your agency is a partner on it, not the owner.
- Meta Pixel Helper shows one pixel ID, no warnings, on every page template, including the thank-you page.
- With CAPI (Conversions API) on, key events show both Browser and Server in Events Manager, and counts are not doubled.
- Starting rule: EMQ (Event Match Quality) for Lead and Purchase reaches “Good” or better, roughly 6 out of 10 or higher.
- No email, phone or health words appear in page URLs or event parameters sent to Meta.
Mistakes we see on real accounts
- Creating the pixel inside the agency’s portfolio. When the contract ends, the client loses their audiences and event history.
- Leaving a test_event_code in the live CAPI setup. Server events then appear only in Test events and don’t count for ads.
- Ignoring Events Manager alerts after a website redesign. The pixel silently drops off and ads optimise on no data for weeks.
- Sending raw email or phone in custom parameters. It breaks Meta’s terms and privacy law, and Meta can restrict the dataset.
Agency checklist before you call it done
- Record the dataset ID, owning portfolio ID, install method and CAPI method in the client’s tracking sheet.
- Connect the dataset to the right ad account(s) and assign your agency as partner in Business settings → Data sources → Datasets.
- Screenshot Pixel Helper and Test events showing PageView. Save them to the client folder.
- Open the Diagnostics tab in Events Manager. Fix or note every issue, then screenshot it clean.
- Reject cookies on the banner and confirm the pixel does not fire. Screenshot the result.
- Ask the client to confirm their privacy policy mentions Meta tracking, and keep their reply.
- Add a change-log entry: date, method, GTM version number.
Handover message to the client
Hi [Client name], the Meta Pixel is live on [website]. Dataset ID: [1234567890]. It belongs to your business portfolio, and we have partner access. Please tell us before any website change, so tracking keeps working.
Senior tip
Format phone numbers with the country code before hashing (91 for India, 971 for UAE). Kerala forms often collect 10-digit numbers, and missing codes quietly lower Event Match Quality.
Practice & check
Now do it for real
Reading is not doing. Open your own account and complete this task before you move on.
Practice task (5 min)
Install the pixel on your practice site, then screenshot Meta Pixel Helper showing one pixel and a PageView event.
Prove it
Two questions. Get both right and this SOP is done.
Common questions
Is the Meta Pixel the same as the Facebook Pixel?
Yes. Facebook Pixel was renamed Meta Pixel, and Events Manager now groups it inside a “dataset”.
Do I need Google Tag Manager to install the Meta Pixel?
No, but it’s the cleanest way. You can also paste the base code into your site’s <head>, or use the official app on Shopify or WordPress.
How do I check if my Meta Pixel is working?
Use the Meta Pixel Helper Chrome extension on your site, or Events Manager → Test events. You should see a PageView event.
What is the Conversions API?
A way to send the same events from your website’s server to Meta, not only from the visitor’s browser. It recovers results lost to ad blockers and privacy settings. Use it with the pixel and the same event_id so events aren’t counted twice.
Done. That’s a real skill, not a certificate.
