The ad with the best CTR that nobody bought from
A Kochi furniture store ran two Meta ads for a sofa sale. Ad A, a funny reel, had a 3.1% CTR. Ad B, a plain photo with the price and “EMI from ₹1,999”, had 0.9%.
The team wanted to move the whole budget to Ad A. Before that, we opened the CRM. Ad A had sent 1,200 visitors and 4 enquiries. Ad B had sent 350 visitors and 11 enquiries.
The reel was entertaining, so people clicked out of curiosity and left. The price ad clicked less but pre-qualified people: anyone who clicked already knew the price.
They kept Ad B as the main ad and used the reel’s hook as the opening of a new price-led version. CTR is the start of the story, not the end.
Illustrative example based on a common pattern in Kerala e-commerce accounts. Numbers rounded.
What CTR measures
CTR measures attention. Out of everyone who saw your ad, post or search listing, what share clicked? A higher CTR usually means the creative, headline or offer matches what that audience wants.
Each platform counts it a little differently. Meta shows “CTR (all)”, which includes likes, profile taps and “see more”, and “CTR (link click-through rate)”, which counts only clicks to your website. Use link CTR. Google Ads CTR is clicks on the ad ÷ times it showed. In Search Console, CTR is clicks ÷ impressions for your organic listing.
CTR = clicks ÷ impressions × 100
Calculate your CTR
- CTR
- 1.20%
- Cost per click
- ₹12.50
- Starting range
- 0.8–1.5%
Inside the starting range. Now look at what happens after the click: landing page conversion rate and cost per lead.
Starting ranges are rules of thumb for Indian accounts, not promises. Your own account history is the better benchmark.

Worked example
| Impressions | 40,000 |
|---|---|
| Link clicks | 480 |
| CTR | 480 ÷ 40,000 × 100 = 1.2% |
| Spend | ₹6,000 |
| Cost per click | 6,000 ÷ 480 = ₹12.50 |
How experienced marketers use CTR
1. Pick the creative to scale
When three ads target the same audience, the one with the clearly higher link CTR usually wins the auction more cheaply. Confirm with cost per lead before moving budget.
2. Spot creative fatigue early
If CTR drops week after week while frequency rises above 3–4, people have seen the ad too often. Refresh the hook or the visual before cost per result climbs.
3. Fix search ads and Quality Score
In Google Ads, a low CTR on a keyword often means the ad doesn’t repeat what the person searched. Put the keyword in a headline; expected CTR is part of Quality Score.
4. Rewrite titles for SEO
In Search Console, pages with many impressions but low CTR are quick wins. A clearer title and meta description can double clicks without moving up a single position.
What good looks like
| Business type | Starting rule | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Meta feed ads (link CTR) | 0.8–1.5% | Starting rule. Reels and stories can run lower; remarketing runs higher. |
| Google Search ads | 3–8% | Brand keywords often 10%+. Generic keywords sit lower. |
| Google Display / Demand Gen | 0.3–1% | People are browsing, not searching, so CTR is naturally low. |
| Organic search (Search Console) | 2–6% average | Depends heavily on position. Position 1 can be 25%+, page 2 under 1%. |
When the number lies
- Curiosity clicks
- Clickbait hooks lift CTR and lower lead quality. Always read CTR next to landing page conversion rate and cost per lead.
- CTR (all) on Meta
- It counts any click on the ad, including “see more” and profile taps. It can look twice as good as the link CTR.
- Tiny samples
- 20 clicks from 1,000 impressions is 2%, but one extra click changes it a lot. Wait for a few thousand impressions before judging.
- Brand searches
- People searching your name click your ad or listing at very high rates. Mixed with other keywords, they make the account CTR look better than it is.
Mistakes to avoid
Scaling the ad with the highest CTR
Budget moves to the ad that entertains instead of the one that sells. Check cost per lead first.
Reporting CTR (all) to clients
Inflated numbers that collapse when someone checks link clicks. Report link CTR.
Comparing CTR across platforms
A 1% Meta CTR is healthy; a 1% Search CTR is weak. Compare within the same platform and placement.
Ignoring CTR in Search Console
Pages ranking in the top 5 with 1% CTR leave clicks on the table. A title rewrite is a free fix.

Questions people ask about CTR
How do you calculate CTR?
Divide clicks by impressions and multiply by 100. 250 clicks from 10,000 impressions is a 2.5% CTR.
What is a good CTR for Facebook and Instagram ads?
A link CTR of about 0.8–1.5% is a healthy starting range for feed ads in India. Remarketing and strong offers can go above 2%. Judge it against your own past ads, not a single number.
What is a good CTR for Google Ads?
For Search campaigns, 3–8% is a reasonable starting range. Brand keywords usually run higher and broad generic keywords lower. Display CTR is much lower, often under 1%.
What is the difference between CTR (all) and link CTR on Meta?
CTR (all) counts every click on the ad, including expanding the text, opening the profile or reacting. Link CTR counts only clicks that go to your destination. Use link CTR for performance.
Does a high CTR mean a good ad?
Not on its own. A high CTR means the ad gets attention. A good ad also brings leads or sales at a cost the business can afford, so check cost per result too.
