The short answer

Write an SEO title that puts the main keyword near the start, says what the page offers and fits in about 50–60 characters, e.g. “Digital Marketing Course in Trivandrum | Unlearn Academy”. Write a meta description of about 150–160 characters that answers the search and gives a reason to click. In WordPress, add both in your SEO plugin’s box under the editor.

About this SOP: why it matters, where and when

Why it matters: Better titles and descriptions raise click-through rate, which turns existing rankings into more visitors.

Where: In your SEO plugin (WordPress) or page settings (Shopify, Webflow, Wix).

When: For every new page, and when Search Console shows low CTR (SOP 210).

Stage 1

Write the title

  1. 1

Look at a real snippet: the blue line is the title, the grey text is the meta description.

  2. 2

Formula: Main keyword + what makes it different | Brand. Examples:

    • “Digital Marketing Course in Trivandrum | Unlearn Academy”
    • “How to Set Up Google Search Console (2026 Step-by-Step)”
  3. 3

Keep it around 50–60 characters so it isn’t cut off, and make every page’s title unique.

    Note

Google sometimes rewrites titles it thinks don’t match the page. Clear, honest titles that match the H1 are rewritten less.

Stage 2

Write the meta description

  1. 1

In about 150–160 characters: answer the search, add one proof point (fees, duration, rating, location), and end with a reason to click.

  2. 2

Example: “Learn Meta Ads, Google Ads, SEO and AI tools at our Kazhakoottam campus. Four levels, real client projects, placement support. Book a free demo class.”

  3. 3

Meta descriptions don’t directly affect ranking, but they affect clicks. Google may show a different snippet if yours doesn’t match the query.

Stage 3

Add them in your SEO plugin

  1. 1

Open the page in the WordPress editor and find your plugin’s box:

    • Yoast SEO: the Yoast panel below the editor (or the Yoast icon top right) → “SEO title” and “Meta description”.
    • Rank Math: the Rank Math icon top right → General → “Edit Snippet”.
    • All in One SEO: the AIOSEO Settings panel below the editor → “Post Title” and “Meta Description”.
    • SEOPress: the SEOPress metabox below the editor → Titles settings tab.
  2. 2

Update the page, then check the source (right-click → View page source → search for <title>) or the plugin’s preview.

  3. 3

Shopify: product or page → “Search engine listing” → Edit. Webflow/Wix: page settings → SEO.

Practice & check

Now do it for real

Reading is not doing. Open your own account and complete this task before you move on.

Practice task (5 min)

Rewrite the title and meta description for three pages of a real site. Check each in a SERP preview and against the character guides.

Prove it

1. Where should the main keyword go in the title?
2. Does the meta description directly improve rankings?

Two questions. Get both right and this SOP is done.

Common questions

How long should an SEO title be?

Around 50–60 characters. Google truncates by pixel width, so very wide letters can cut it shorter.

Why is Google showing a different title from mine?

Google rewrites titles it thinks don’t describe the page well, are too long or are stuffed with keywords. Match the title to the H1 and the content.

Done. That’s a real skill, not a certificate.
