CPC (cost per click): what you pay per click, and the CPC you can actually afford

CPC (cost per click) is what you pay on average for one click on your ad: ad spend ÷ clicks. ₹15,000 for 600 clicks is a ₹25 CPC. The CPC you can afford depends on your landing page: maximum CPC ≈ target cost per lead × conversion rate. At a ₹500 target and 5% conversion, that’s about ₹25 before GST.

The CPC that was “too high” and the landing page that fixed it

A Kottayam IELTS coaching centre was paying ₹42 per click on Google for “ielts coaching near me” and wanted to drop the keyword.

Their landing page converted 2% of visitors, so each lead cost about ₹2,100. Competitors with similar CPCs were getting leads far cheaper.

We didn’t touch the bids. We rebuilt the page: batch dates and fees on the first screen, a 3-field form and a WhatsApp button. Conversion rate went to 6%.

Same ₹42 CPC, cost per lead down to about ₹700. CPC is only “high” relative to what each click turns into.

Illustrative example based on a common pattern in Kerala e-commerce accounts. Numbers rounded.

What CPC measures

CPC is the price of one visit from an ad. On Google Search you bid in an auction for each keyword; on Meta you mostly pay for impressions and CPC is the result of CPM and CTR.

On Google, actual CPC depends on your bid, competitors’ bids, Quality Score and expected impact of assets. On Meta, CPC = CPM ÷ (CTR × 10): better creative with a higher CTR lowers CPC even when CPM stays the same.

CPC = ad spend ÷ clicks · Max affordable CPC ≈ target cost per lead × conversion rate

Calculate your CPC and the CPC you can afford

CPC
₹25.00
Cost per lead (with GST)
₹590
Max CPC you can afford
₹21.19

At this conversion rate you can afford about ₹21.19 per click. Lower CPC (better ads, Quality Score, tighter keywords) or lift the landing page conversion rate.

Worked example

Ad spend (before GST)₹15,000
Clicks600 → CPC ₹25
Landing page conversion rate5% → 30 leads
Cost per lead with GST₹17,700 ÷ 30 = ₹590
If the page converts at 7%42 leads → ₹421 per lead, same CPC

How experienced marketers use CPC

  1. 1. Decide whether a keyword is worth bidding on

Compare Keyword Planner’s top-of-page bid with the maximum CPC you can afford. If the market price is three times your limit, look for longer, more specific keywords instead.

  2. 2. Find the real problem when cost per lead rises

Higher CPC with stable conversion rate is auction pressure. Stable CPC with falling conversion rate is a landing page or lead quality problem.

  3. 3. Lower CPC on Google with Quality Score

Ads that match the search and land on a relevant, fast page earn better Quality Score, which lowers the CPC needed to win the same position.

  4. 4. Lower CPC on Meta with creative

On Meta, CPC falls when more people click the same impressions. Test hooks and offers before changing targeting.

What good looks like

Business typeStarting ruleWhy
Google Search, local services in Kerala₹15–₹80Starting rule. Legal, medical and finance keywords can be far higher.
Google Search, education and courses₹20–₹120Competitive near admission season.
Meta feed ads (link click)₹5–₹25Cheaper clicks, usually lower intent than search.

When the number lies

Cheap clicks, wrong people
Very low CPC often comes from broad audiences, display placements or irrelevant search terms. Check search terms and conversion rate before celebrating.
Average hides the spread
An average CPC of ₹25 can mean brand clicks at ₹5 and non-brand clicks at ₹60. Look at CPC by campaign and keyword.
Meta “CPC (all)”
Counts every click on the ad, not just link clicks. Use cost per link click.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Pausing keywords only because CPC is high

You lose your best-converting keywords. Judge on cost per lead, not CPC.

  • Raising bids to fix low traffic without checking Quality Score

You pay more for the same position instead of fixing relevance.

  • Ignoring GST in CPC maths

Your real cost per click is 18% higher than the dashboard shows.
