Creative fatigue: when your best ad stops working

Creative fatigue happens when your audience has seen an ad so often that they stop noticing or responding to it. Signs are rising frequency, falling CTR and hook rate, and rising CPM and cost per result over one to three weeks. Fix it by launching new creatives with different hooks, formats and angles, widening the audience, and keeping a steady pipeline of fresh ads.

The reel that worked for six weeks

A Kochi gym’s Instagram reel brought trial bookings at ₹180 each for five weeks. In week six, cost jumped to ₹420.

Frequency had reached 5 in the local audience, hook rate fell from 32% to 18% and CTR halved. Nothing else had changed.

They launched three new reels with different first-second hooks (a member transformation, a trainer tip and a price reveal). Cost per booking returned to about ₹200.

Illustrative example based on a common pattern in Kerala e-commerce accounts. Numbers rounded.

What creative fatigue is

Hook rate is 3-second video plays ÷ impressions: the share of people who stopped scrolling. It usually drops first when an ad fatigues.

Small local audiences fatigue fastest. Ads Manager may also flag fatigue in the delivery column.

Hook rate = 3-second video plays ÷ impressions · Fatigue = frequency ↑ + CTR ↓ + CPA ↑

How experienced marketers use Creative fatigue

  1. 1. Plan creative volume

Small budgets need 2–4 new ads a month; larger budgets more.

  2. 2. Diagnose rising costs

Check fatigue before blaming the algorithm or audience.

  3. 3. Brief designers

Ask for new hooks and angles, not new colours.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Changing only colours or text

Meta and people see it as the same ad.

  • Turning off the old winner too early

Losing a working ad before the new ones prove themselves.

  • No creative pipeline

    A crisis every few weeks.
