The short answer

A good Meta Ads structure in 2026 uses one ad account per brand, one campaign per business objective or offer, as few ad sets as possible with broad audiences, and 4–8 clearly different creatives in each ad set. Give every ad set enough budget for about 50 results in 7 days, roughly 7× your target cost per result per day.

You’ll need
A Meta ad account (SOP 010).
Who does this
The person responsible for paid ads or CRO.
About this SOP: why it matters, where and when

Why it matters: A messy account makes reporting and optimisation hard and confuses your team.

Where: Paper, the Unlearn Campaign Planner sheet, or a spreadsheet.

When: Before every new campaign, and every 3 months as a check.

Stage 1

Set up your workspace

  1. 1

Make a copy of the Unlearn Meta Ads Campaign Planner sheet.

  2. 2

Optional: copy the Unlearn Ad Account Structure template to present to clients or your team.

  3. 3

Just starting? Pen and paper are fine for a first draft.

Stage 2

Decide the account level

How many ad accounts do you need?

  1. 1

Working for a client? Run their campaigns inside their ad account, never yours.

    • Ask them to give you access using SOP 062.
  2. 2

Does the business own several separate brands? Create one ad account per brand. Otherwise keep everything in one account.

    Tip

New business portfolios often start with a limit of just 1 ad account. The limit grows as you run ads and pay on time. Check it in Settings → Business info.

  3. 3

See how it looks in Ads Manager: campaigns, ad sets and ads each have their own tab.

  1. 1

Campaigns: create at least one campaign per business objective.

    • Example: Campaign 1 – Leads. Campaign 2 – Website enrolments (Sales).
    • Not sure which objective? Use SOP 070.
  2. 2

Ad sets: keep as few as you can. Start with one broad ad set per campaign. Add a separate ad set only when the audience really needs a different message, e.g. remarketing past enquirers or a Malayalam-only audience.

    Tip

Age, gender, country, platform, placement and device can be compared with Ads Manager breakdowns. No need for separate ad sets.

  3. 3

Using a conversion objective? Give each ad set enough budget to reach about 50 results in 7 days. That is Meta’s guideline for leaving the learning phase.

    • Quick maths: daily budget ≈ 7 × your target cost per result. Target ₹300 per lead → about ₹2,100 a day per ad set.
    • Can’t afford that? Use fewer ad sets, or optimise for a more frequent step (SOP 070).
  4. 4

Ads: put 4–8 clearly different creatives in each ad set. Different means a new idea, not a new headline: a student testimonial reel, a placement-proof carousel, a founder talking-head video, a fee-and-batch static.

    Note

Want a clean answer to “which works better”? Use Meta’s A/B test tool (Experiments) instead of swapping headlines by hand.

Practice & check

Now do it for real

Reading is not doing. Open your own account and complete this task before you move on.

Practice task (5 min)

Sketch a blueprint for one business: 1 ad account, 2 campaigns (one per objective), 1–2 ad sets in each and 5 different creative ideas per ad set.

Prove it

1. When should you create a separate ad account?
2. Do you need separate ad sets to compare age groups?

Two questions. Get both right and this SOP is done.

Common questions

How many campaigns should a Meta ad account have?

One per business objective or offer, for example one for leads and one for sales. In 2026, fewer campaigns and ad sets with more creative variety usually perform better than many small splits.

How many ads should I put in one ad set?

Around 4–8 clearly different creatives. Meta uses the creative to find the right people, so variety in ideas and formats matters more than audience splits.

What is the Meta Ads learning phase?

The period when Meta is still learning who to show your ads to. Its guideline is about 50 optimisation results per ad set in 7 days to exit it.

Done. That’s a real skill, not a certificate.
