The short answer
To write ad copy with AI, first give the tool a real brief: the offer, audience, their problems and objections, proof, tone and platform limits. Ask for several angles (pain, result, proof, offer), then edit the best lines yourself, check every claim and ad policy, keep character limits, and test 2–3 versions. AI speeds up drafts; your customer knowledge makes the copy work.
Before you start
By the end of this SOP
Tested ad copy variations for Meta and Google built from a clear brief.
- Time
- 30–45 minutes per campaign
- You’ll need
- An AI assistant (ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini), the offer details, customer reviews or sales call notes.
- Who does this
- The ads specialist or copywriter.
About this SOP: why it matters, where and when
Why it matters: AI can produce many angles quickly, so you test more ideas, but unchecked AI copy can be generic, wrong or against ad policies.
Where: Your AI assistant, a Google Doc, and Ads Manager or Google Ads.
When: Before launching a campaign or refreshing creatives.
Stage 1
Write the brief
- 1
Collect: product or service, price or offer, target customer, location, top 3 problems, top 3 objections, proof (reviews, numbers), tone, and platform.
- 2
Paste 5–10 real customer phrases from reviews, WhatsApp chats or calls. These make copy sound real.
- 3
Don’t paste personal data (customer names, phone numbers) into AI tools.
Stage 2
Generate angles
- 1
Prompt: “Using this brief, write 4 ad angles for Instagram: pain, desired result, social proof, offer. For each, give a hook under 10 words, primary text under 125 characters and a headline under 40 characters.”
- 2
For Google RSAs: “Write 15 headlines under 30 characters and 4 descriptions under 90 characters. Include the keyword ‘[keyword]’ in at least 3 headlines.”
- 3
Ask for Malayalam or Manglish versions if your audience uses them, and have a native speaker check them.
Stage 3
Edit and check
- 1
Remove generic phrases (“unlock”, “elevate”, “game-changer”) and add specifics: numbers, places, real results.
- 2
Check every claim is true and provable. Remove guarantees and before-after claims that break health or finance policies.
- 3
Check character limits in the ad preview, not just in the AI tool.
Stage 4
Test and learn
- 1
- 2
After 7–14 days, keep the winner and feed results back to the AI: “Angle B won with 2× CTR; write 5 new variations of that angle.”
- 3
Keep a prompt and results log so the team reuses what works.
Practice & check
Now do it for real
Reading is not doing. Open your own account and complete this task before you move on.
Practice task (5 min)
Write a brief for a local business and generate 4 angles with AI, then edit them by hand and note what you changed.
Prove it
Two questions. Get both right and this SOP is done.
Common questions
Is AI-written ad copy allowed on Meta and Google?
Yes, as long as it follows ad policies and the claims are true.
Which AI tool is best for ad copy?
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all work well with a good brief; the brief matters more than the tool.
Should I use Meta’s or Google’s built-in AI text?
You can test it, but review every generated line; switch it off if it adds generic or inaccurate text.
Done. That’s a real skill, not a certificate.
