The short answer
To set up Google Merchant Center, sign in at merchants.google.com with the business Google account, enter your business details, then verify and claim your website (the easiest way is through your Google tag or Google Analytics). Add shipping and return policies under Settings, connect products with the Shopify Google & YouTube app, the Google for WooCommerce plugin or a Google Sheet, and fix any issues. Approved products can show in free listings and Shopping ads.
Before you start
By the end of this SOP
A verified Merchant Center account with shipping, returns and approved products showing in free listings.
- Time
- 60–90 minutes, plus a few days for product review
- You’ll need
- An online store with real product pages, prices in INR, a returns policy page and contact details; admin access to the store and its Google tag or Analytics.
- Who does this
- The store owner or the person managing the online store.
About this SOP: why it matters, where and when
Why it matters: Without Merchant Center, your products can’t appear in Google Shopping, the Shopping tab, image results with prices, or Shopping and Performance Max campaigns.
Where: merchants.google.com, plus Shopify or WordPress admin.
When: Before running Shopping or Performance Max campaigns, and as soon as a store goes live (free listings cost nothing).
Stage 1
Create the account and add business details
- 1
Go to merchants.google.com and sign in with the business-owned Google account (not a personal or agency email).
- 2
Enter the business name exactly as customers see it, the country (India) and the website URL.
- 3
Fill in business address and customer service contact (phone or email). Google checks these against your website.
Stage 2
Verify and claim the website
- 1
Open Settings → Business info → Website. Choose a verification method.
- 2
Easiest: “Google tag” or “Google Analytics” if the same Google account has access. Otherwise use the HTML tag (paste it in the site head) or a DNS record.
- 3
After verification, click Claim website. Claiming locks the site to this Merchant Center account.
Stage 3
Set shipping and returns
- 1
Settings → Shipping and returns → add a shipping service: delivery area (India), delivery times (handling + transit days) and rates (flat, free over a threshold, or by weight).
- 2
Add a return policy: number of days, condition, who pays return shipping, and the link to your returns page.
- 3
Make sure the same rules appear on your website.
Watch out
Missing or mismatched shipping and return info is a common reason for “Misrepresentation” suspensions.
Stage 4
Add your products
- 1
Shopify: install the Google & YouTube app, connect the Merchant Center account and sync products.
- 2
WooCommerce: install Google for WooCommerce, connect accounts and sync. Use one sync method only.
- 3
Small catalogue without a plugin: Products → Add products → Google Sheets, fill the template (id, title, description, link, image_link, price, availability, brand, gtin or mpn).
- 4
Wait for review (usually 1–3 days). Then open Products → Needs attention and fix issues (SOP 323).
Practice & check
Now do it for real
Reading is not doing. Open your own account and complete this task before you move on.
Practice task (5 min)
Create a Merchant Center account for a test or real store, add shipping and returns, and submit 10 products through a Google Sheet.
Prove it
Two questions. Get both right and this SOP is done.
Common questions
Is Google Merchant Center free?
Yes. The account and free product listings are free. You pay only if you run Shopping or Performance Max ads.
How long does Merchant Center product review take?
Usually 1–3 business days for new products; changes to existing products are often faster.
Do I need GTINs for my products?
For branded products that have barcodes, yes. For handmade or own-brand items without barcodes, provide brand and MPN, or set identifier_exists to no.
Done. That’s a real skill, not a certificate.
