The short answer

In 2026, start Meta Ads targeting broad: set location, language and minimum age, turn on Advantage+ audience, and let your creative attract the right people. Add custom audiences (website visitors, customer lists, engagers) and lookalikes as suggestions, not hard walls. Exclude people who already converted, and check audience overlap.

About this SOP: why it matters, where and when

Why it matters: Your audience can make or break your campaign.

Where: Meta Ads Manager.

When: Every time you create a new ad set.

Stage 1

Know the 3 audience types

  1. 1

Core audiences reach new people by location, age, interests and behaviour.

  2. 2

Custom audiences reach people who already know you: customer lists, website visitors, app users, Page or Instagram engagers.

  3. 3

Lookalike audiences reach new people who look like your best customers.

  4. 4

Use the Unlearn Audience Decision Tree to pick one.

    Tip

In 2026 your creative does most of the targeting. A reel about “switching careers at 30” finds career switchers by itself; you don’t need an interest for it.

Stage 2

Build your audience

  1. 1

Prospecting (new people): start broad. Location + language + minimum age, Advantage+ audience on, and no interests at first.

    • Add 1–3 interests or a lookalike only as suggestions if the account is new and has little data.
    • Let different creative angles (fees, placements, student stories, Malayalam explainers) pull in different people.
  2. 2

Custom: start with people closest to your goal, like checkout visitors who didn’t buy. Aim for at least 1,000 people.

    • Why 1,000: smaller audiences barely deliver and frequency climbs fast.
    • Use time windows: 0–5 days after purchase ask for a review, 6–30 days upsell, 31–60 days repeat purchase.
  3. 3

Lookalike: build it from your most valuable list (enrolled students, not all leads) and add it as an audience suggestion. 1% is a sensible starting size, but Meta can expand beyond it for conversion goals.

    • Test it against plain broad with Meta’s A/B test tool before you decide it is better (SOP 031).

Stage 3

Layer and exclude

  1. 1

Always set location and language. These, minimum age and exclusions are hard limits. With Advantage+ audience, interests, age and gender are only suggestions Meta may go beyond.

  2. 2

Exclude people who already did the action using a custom audience, e.g. exclude existing leads from a lead campaign.

Stage 4

Check audience overlap

Overlapping ad sets compete for the same people and push up costs.

  1. 1

In Ads Manager, open All tools → Audiences. This is also where you create Custom, Lookalike and Saved audiences.

  2. 2

Tick the audiences you want to compare, then choose “Show audience overlap”.

    Note

Very small audiences can’t be compared. The tool compares saved and custom audiences only.

  3. 3

High overlap with small audiences and big daily reach? Merge them or change the targeting.

2. You set Advantage+ audience with a 1% lookalike. What does Meta treat as a hard limit?

Two questions. Get both right and this SOP is done.

Common questions

Can I still exclude interests in Meta Ads?

No. Meta started removing detailed targeting exclusions in July 2024, and they stopped working completely in early 2025. You can still exclude custom audiences, such as existing customers or leads.

Is detailed targeting still a hard limit in Meta Ads?

With Advantage+ audience, interests, age and gender work as suggestions. Location, language, minimum age and exclusions remain hard limits.

What lookalike percentage should I start with?

1% of your best customers is a fine start, added as a suggestion. For conversion goals Meta can expand beyond it, so judge it by results against a broad audience, not by its size.

Is broad targeting really better for a small Kerala business?

Usually yes once tracking works, because Meta finds buyers from your creative and conversion data. If the pixel has almost no conversions yet, add a few interests or a lookalike as suggestions for the first weeks.

Done. That’s a real skill, not a certificate.
