The short answer
To track WhatsApp clicks, create a GTM trigger “Click – Just Links” that fires when Click URL contains wa.me or api.whatsapp.com. Attach a GA4 event tag (whatsapp_click), a Google Ads conversion tag set as a Secondary action, and a Meta Contact event. Test in Preview, publish, and mark whatsapp_click as a key event in GA4 only if a chat is a real lead for the business.
Before you start
By the end of this SOP
WhatsApp, phone and outbound clicks show as events in GA4 and as conversions in Google Ads and Meta, without double counting leads.
- Time
- 20–30 minutes
- You’ll need
- GTM on the site (SOP 004), GA4 installed through GTM (SOP 009), and Google Ads and Meta conversion tracking set up (SOP 025, SOP 017).
- Who does this
- The person who manages tracking for the website.
About this SOP: why it matters, where and when
Why it matters: Without click tracking, campaigns that bring WhatsApp enquiries look like they have zero results, and Smart Bidding stops showing them.
Where: tagmanager.google.com, GA4, Google Ads Goals and Meta Events Manager.
When: Whenever a website has a WhatsApp button, a click-to-call number or links to booking sites.
Stage 1
Turn on click variables in GTM
- 1
In GTM, open Variables → Configure under Built-in Variables.
- 2
Tick Click URL, Click Text and Page Path.
- 3
Open Preview, click the WhatsApp button on your site, and check in Tag Assistant that a Link Click event appears with the right Click URL (for example https://wa.me/9198…).
Stage 2
Create the triggers
- 1
Triggers → New → Click – Just Links → Some Link Clicks → Click URL contains wa.me. Add an OR condition with a second trigger for api.whatsapp.com if your button uses it. Name it “Click – WhatsApp”.
- 2
Create “Click – Phone”: Click – Just Links, Click URL starts with tel:
- 3
Optional “Click – Outbound”: Click URL does not contain yoursite.in, and Click URL starts with http.
Tip
Tick “Wait for tags” and “Check validation” only if clicks open in the same tab and tags don’t fire in Preview.
Stage 3
Create the tags
- 1
GA4: Tags → New → Google Analytics: GA4 Event. Event name whatsapp_click, parameter link_url = {{Click URL}}, trigger “Click – WhatsApp”. Repeat with phone_click for the phone trigger.
- 2
Google Ads: create a conversion action “WhatsApp click” (Goals → Conversions → New → Website → manual setup), set it to Secondary, then add a Google Ads Conversion Tracking tag with its ID and label on the same trigger.
- 3
Meta: add a tag that sends fbq('track', 'Contact') on the WhatsApp and phone triggers, or use your Meta GTM template’s Contact event.
- 4
Use Preview to click each button once and confirm each tag fires once.
Stage 4
Publish and decide what counts
- 1
Submit → Publish the GTM version with a clear name, for example “WhatsApp + phone click tracking”.
- 2
In GA4, after the event appears (up to 24 hours), mark whatsapp_click as a key event only if the business treats a chat as a lead.
- 3
Agree with the client which action is Primary in Google Ads. Usually: form submit and calls from ads are Primary; WhatsApp clicks are Secondary until you can match chats to sales.
Note
If WhatsApp is the main sales channel, track it as Primary but ask the team to log real WhatsApp leads in the CRM so you can check quality.
Practice & check
Now do it for real
Reading is not doing. Open your own account and complete this task before you move on.
Practice task (5 min)
Set up WhatsApp and phone click tracking on a test site, then screenshot Tag Assistant showing each tag firing once per click.
Prove it
Two questions. Get both right and this SOP is done.
Common questions
Can I track WhatsApp clicks without GTM?
Some WordPress plugins and site builders add click events for you, but GTM gives you one place to send the same click to GA4, Google Ads and Meta consistently.
Why does my WhatsApp click tag not fire?
The button may be inside a widget that doesn’t use a normal link, or the link may open before the tag fires. Check the Click URL in Preview and try the All Elements trigger if Just Links doesn’t see it.
Should WhatsApp clicks be a conversion in Google Ads?
Yes, but usually as a Secondary action so Smart Bidding doesn’t chase taps over real leads. Make it Primary only if chats reliably become customers.
Done. That’s a real skill, not a certificate.
