Reach vs impressions: people, views and how often each person sees your ad

Reach is the number of different people who saw your ad at least once. Impressions is the total number of times it was shown, including repeat views. Frequency is impressions ÷ reach: the average number of times each person saw it. If 10,000 people saw an ad 30,000 times, reach is 10,000, impressions 30,000 and frequency 3.

80,000 impressions from the same 9,000 people

A Kottayam furniture shop was proud of 80,000 impressions a week on a small ₹1,500-a-day Meta budget.

Reach was only 9,000, so frequency was almost 9. The same people saw the same sofa ad nearly every day, CTR halved and cost per enquiry doubled in two weeks.

Widening the radius, adding two new creatives and capping retargeting brought weekly frequency back to about 2.5 and enquiries recovered.

Illustrative example based on a common pattern in Kerala e-commerce accounts. Numbers rounded.

What reach, impressions and frequency mean

Impressions count every time an ad appears on a screen. Reach counts people, so it is always lower than impressions. Meta estimates reach, so it can differ slightly between reports.

Frequency tells you how hard you are pushing the same audience. Small audiences and big budgets push frequency up fast.

Frequency = impressions ÷ reach · CPM = spend ÷ impressions × 1,000

Calculate frequency and cost per 1,000 people

Frequency

CPM
₹125
Cost per 1,000 people reached
₹400

About 3.2 views per person per week. For cold audiences that is high; watch for falling CTR and rising CPA, and refresh creative or widen the audience.

How experienced marketers use Reach vs impressions

  1. 1. Spot audience burnout

Rising frequency with falling CTR is the classic sign of creative fatigue.

  2. 2. Plan awareness campaigns

Reach objectives buy as many different people as possible; frequency caps limit repeats.

  3. 3. Compare channels fairly

Cost per 1,000 people reached is a cleaner comparison than CPM when frequencies differ.

What good looks like

Business typeStarting ruleWhy
Cold prospecting (7 days)1.5–3Starting rule; watch CTR as it climbs.
Retargeting (7 days)3–6Warm audiences tolerate more, with fresh creative.
Brand awareness (7 days)2–3Use reach objective with a frequency cap.

When the number lies

Reach is estimated
Meta reach is modelled, so adding up reach across ad sets over-counts people seen in both.
Impressions aren’t views
An impression can be a fast scroll past; look at hook rate and ThruPlays for attention.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Celebrating impressions alone

High numbers can hide a tiny audience seeing ads too often.

  • Adding reach across campaigns

You count the same people twice.

  • No frequency check on small audiences

Costs rise quietly as people tune out.

Questions people ask about reach vs impressions

What is the difference between reach and impressions?

What is a good frequency for Facebook ads?

As a starting rule, about 1.5–3 per week for cold audiences and 3–6 for retargeting. Watch CTR and CPA rather than a fixed number.

Can impressions be lower than reach?

No. Each person reached has at least one impression.
