GCLID: the Google Ads click ID that connects ads to real results

GCLID (Google Click Identifier) is a unique code Google Ads adds to your landing page URL, like ?gclid=Cj0K…, when someone clicks your ad and auto-tagging is on. Google Ads, GA4 and your CRM use it to link that exact click to a later conversion, including offline sales. Keep auto-tagging on, don’t strip URL parameters, and store the GCLID with each lead.

The redirect that erased every click ID

A Thrissur real-estate developer’s Google Ads showed almost no conversions, even though the sales team logged plenty of site-visit bookings from ads.

Their landing page redirected from http to https and dropped everything after the “?”, so the GCLID never reached the page or the form.

Fixing the redirect to keep URL parameters brought conversions back the same day, and offline imports from the CRM started matching.

Illustrative example based on a common pattern in Kerala e-commerce accounts. Numbers rounded.

What the GCLID is

When auto-tagging is on, every ad click gets a GCLID in the URL. The Google tag (with Conversion Linker in GTM) stores it in a first-party cookie for up to 90 days.

When that person converts on your site, the tag sends the conversion with the GCLID. For offline conversions, your CRM stores the GCLID with the lead and uploads it later with the sale.

Ad click → ?gclid=… in URL → stored in cookie → sent with conversion or CRM upload

How experienced marketers use Auto-tagging (GCLID)

  1. 1. Accurate Google Ads conversions

Conversions can only be attributed to the right click when the GCLID is stored.

  2. 2. Offline conversion imports

Send qualified leads and sales from the CRM back to Google Ads using the GCLID.

  3. 3. Diagnose missing conversions

If test clicks arrive without ?gclid in the URL, something is stripping it.

What good looks like

Business typeStarting ruleWhy
Cookie windowUp to 90 daysMatches the longest click-through window.

When the number lies

Manual UTMs overriding
Adding manual UTMs to Google Ads final URLs can override auto-tagged data in GA4.
Consent denied
Clicks from people who decline cookies may not store a GCLID; enhanced conversions help fill gaps.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Turning off auto-tagging

GA4 loses Google Ads detail and offline imports can’t match.

  • Redirects that drop parameters

No GCLID reaches the page, so conversions go missing.

  • Not saving the GCLID in the CRM

No way to send real sales back to Google Ads.
