The short answer
To exclude internal traffic in GA4, go to Admin → Data streams → your web stream → Configure tag settings → Define internal traffic, and add your office IP addresses. Then go to Admin → Data filters, open the Internal traffic filter, leave it in Testing to check it works, and switch it to Active. Because many Indian connections change IP, also tag staff browsers with a cookie through GTM.
Before you start
By the end of this SOP
Staff and test visits are filtered out of GA4 reports, and test leads no longer count as conversions.
- Time
- 20–30 minutes
- Who does this
- The person managing GA4.
About this SOP: why it matters, where and when
Why it matters: Clean data means real conversion rates and fewer false conversions sent to Google Ads.
Where: GA4 Admin, and GTM for the cookie method.
When: Right after setting up GA4, and whenever the office or team changes.
Stage 1
Define internal traffic by IP
- 1
Find your office’s public IP by searching “what is my IP” on the office Wi-Fi. Note both IPv4 and IPv6 if shown.
- 2
In GA4, open Admin → Data streams → your web stream → Configure tag settings → Show more → Define internal traffic → Create.
- 3
Rule name “Office”, traffic_type value internal, match type “IP address equals” (or “begins with” for an IPv6 range), and paste the IP. Save.
- 4
Add a rule per office or fixed connection.
Note
Jio, Airtel and BSNL mobile and many home broadband IPs change often. IP rules alone miss staff working from phones or home.
Stage 2
Cover changing IPs with a cookie (GTM)
Optional but recommended for teams that work from phones or home.
- 1
Create a page only staff know, for example yoursite.in/?internal=yes. In GTM, add a Custom HTML tag that sets a long-lived first-party cookie (for example cookie internal_user=1) when the URL contains internal=yes.
- 2
Create a 1st-Party Cookie variable for internal_user.
- 3
In your Google tag (GA4) configuration, add the parameter traffic_type with value internal when the cookie equals 1 (use a Lookup Table variable).
- 4
Ask each team member to open the special URL once on every browser and phone they use.
Stage 3
Test the filter, then activate it
- 1
Go to Admin → Data settings → Data filters. Open “Internal Traffic” (created automatically) and leave it in Testing.
- 2
Visit the site from the office. In a GA4 exploration, add the dimension “Test data filter name”: your visits should show as matching “Internal Traffic”.
- 3
When it works, change the filter state to Active and save.
- 4
Also check the Developer traffic filter is Active, so GTM Preview sessions don’t count.
Practice & check
Now do it for real
Reading is not doing. Open your own account and complete this task before you move on.
Practice task (5 min)
Set up the internal traffic rule for your office IP, test it with a visit, and screenshot the filter in Testing mode before switching it to Active.
Prove it
Two questions. Get both right and this SOP is done.
Common questions
Why is my internal traffic filter not working?
Usually the IP changed, the rule uses IPv4 while the device uses IPv6, or the filter is still in Testing. Check “Test data filter name” in an exploration.
Can I exclude my own visits without changing settings for everyone?
Yes: use the cookie method on your browsers, or the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on for personal browsing.
Do test form submissions still go to Google Ads?
If they fire the Google Ads tag, yes. Use a test email or form field and exclude it in GTM, or test in GTM Preview without publishing.
Done. That’s a real skill, not a certificate.
