AEO and GEO: how to show up in AI answers, without the hype

AEO (answer engine optimisation) means writing content that directly answers questions so search features and AI tools can quote it. GEO (generative engine optimisation) means making your brand easy for AI assistants like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini to find, trust and cite. Both build on normal SEO: clear answers, real expertise, structured pages, and mentions on trusted sites.

Cited by ChatGPT, invisible on Google

A Kochi digital marketing institute asked ChatGPT for the best courses in Kochi. A competitor appeared every time; they didn’t.

The competitor had a clear course page answering fees, duration and placement in the first lines, was listed on education portals and was discussed on Reddit and Quora.

The institute rewrote course pages with direct answers, added FAQs and course schema, fixed its Google Business Profile and earned mentions on local news and education sites. Within three months it appeared in AI answers for half the test prompts.

Illustrative example based on a common pattern in Kerala e-commerce accounts. Numbers rounded.

What AEO and GEO are

AI answers are built from pages that search engines and AI crawlers can access, understand and trust. Pages that state a clear answer near the top, use headings that match real questions and show real experience are easier to quote.

Mentions matter as much as links: AI tools learn about brands from reviews, directories, news, forums and comparison pages, not only your own site.

Clear answer + trusted mentions + crawlable, structured page → more AI citations

How experienced marketers use AEO

  1. 1. Local services

AI assistants lean on Google Business Profile, reviews and directories for “best X near me” prompts.

  2. 2. Courses and B2B

Comparison and “is X worth it” prompts pull from forums, reviews and clear FAQ pages.

  3. 3. Brand defence

Check what AI tools say about you and fix wrong facts at the source.

When the number lies

llms.txt is not a ranking factor
llms.txt is a proposed file some AI tools read; Google has said it doesn’t use it. It’s cheap to add but won’t fix weak content.
AI answers vary
The same prompt gives different answers by user, location and time. Track trends across many prompts.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Buying “GEO packages” that promise ChatGPT rankings

Nobody controls AI answers; you pay for guesswork.

  • Blocking AI crawlers without deciding

Your content can’t be used or cited.

  • Thin AI-written pages

Low trust for both search and AI tools.

Questions people ask about AEO and GEO

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO focuses on being the direct answer to a question; GEO focuses on being cited and recommended by generative AI tools. They overlap heavily.

Is SEO dead because of AI?

No. AI answers rely on pages that search engines can find and trust, so good SEO is the foundation.

How do I get my business mentioned by ChatGPT?

Have clear, crawlable pages, complete listings, reviews, and mentions on trusted sites and forums. There is no paid shortcut.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

It’s optional. Some AI tools read it, but it doesn’t replace clear content and trusted mentions.
