Digital marketing is the highest-growth career category in Kerala's economy right now. Every business — from the neighbourhood restaurant to the GCC-listed conglomerate — needs people who can run campaigns, manage content, and read data. But most people trying to break into digital marketing in Kerala are doing it wrong. They watch YouTube tutorials, collect certificates, and wonder why they still can't land a job. This roadmap fixes that. It's built from what actually works — based on what Unlearn Academy graduates who are now earning ₹6–12 LPA actually did.
Stage 1 — Foundation (0–3 Months)
The foundation stage is about building the mental model of digital marketing — not memorising tools. Too many beginners start with tutorials on specific platforms without understanding how digital marketing actually works as a system.
What to learn first: - The digital customer journey: awareness → consideration → conversion → retention - How the three main channels work together: organic (SEO + content), paid (Meta + Google Ads), and owned (email + WhatsApp) - Basic analytics: what is a session, conversion, bounce rate, CTR — and why they matter - Brand positioning: what makes a brand memorable online, and how messaging affects performance
Practical exercises: - Audit 3 Kerala-based businesses' digital presence (Instagram, website, Google ranking). Write a 1-page gap analysis for each. - Set up a Google Analytics 4 account on a practice site. Understand what events are being tracked. - Run a small Meta Ads campaign with ₹500. Any objective. Just to understand the interface.
This foundation stage is what L1 Foundation covers at Unlearn Academy — 12 weeks, ₹36,000 + GST offline (₹25,000 + GST online), structured around applied exercises from day one.
Stage 2 — Skill Specialisation (3–6 Months)
After understanding the system, you pick one or two skills to go deep on. The biggest mistake is staying generalist too long. Employers in Kerala hire for specific skills first, then broaden.
The 4 highest-value specialisations for Kerala's market:
Performance Marketing (Meta + Google Ads): Highest salary, highest demand. If you can show an ROAS-positive campaign with ₹10,000+ ad spend, you are immediately employable.
SEO (Search Engine + AI Search): Growing in 2026 because of GEO (optimising for AI search like ChatGPT and Perplexity). SEO specialists who understand both traditional and AI search are increasingly rare and valuable.
UI/UX Design: Highest entry-level salary (₹4–6 LPA). Requires Figma proficiency and portfolio case studies. Demand is growing as Kerala's tech sector expands.
Video + Motion Graphics: High demand driven by social media content needs. DaVinci Resolve + motion skills command a significant premium over basic editing.
How to go deep: - Practice on real briefs, not tutorials. Find a local business willing to let you manage their Meta Ads for free or low cost. Document everything. - Build a single, well-documented case study. One strong case study beats ten weak ones.
Stage 3 — Real Client Work (6–12 Months)
The gap between someone who has studied digital marketing and someone who has done it is visible in every interview. The only way to close it is to work on real briefs, with real clients, with real consequences.
How to get real client work without a job: - Approach local businesses (small retail, clinics, schools, restaurants) and offer to manage their digital presence for 3 months at reduced or no cost, in exchange for documented results you can use as a portfolio piece. - Apply to internships at digital marketing agencies in Trivandrum and Kochi. Even unpaid internships produce portfolio material. - Enrol in L2 Agency Training at Unlearn Academy — this is the structured version of the above. You work on real client briefs under a mentor, with real feedback, in a maximum cohort of 15 students. This is what produces the ₹4–6 LPA placement outcomes at the L2 level.
What "real client work" produces: - A portfolio with documented objectives, execution, and results - The ability to discuss your work in an interview with specific numbers - References from real clients - An understanding of what working under brief constraints actually feels like
Stage 4 — Employment or Freelance (Month 12+)
By the end of 12 months, if you have followed the stages above, you should have at least 3 documented case studies and practical proficiency in 1–2 specialisations. At this point, the choice is employment or freelance.
Employment path: Target agencies and in-house marketing teams in Trivandrum, Kochi, or GCC remote. Starting salary with a strong L2 portfolio: ₹3.5–5 LPA in Kerala, ₹8–15 LPA for GCC remote roles.
Freelance path: Start with 2–3 retainer clients at ₹8,000–15,000/month each. Scale to 5–6 clients at ₹15,000–25,000/month within 18 months. Total monthly income: ₹75,000–1,50,000.
The Unlearn progression: L1 Foundation → L2 Agency Training → L3 Specialisation follows exactly this roadmap in a structured, mentored environment. Most L2 graduates are employment-ready by week 10 of their 12-week programme because they already have documented client work.
